Dubai's private higher education sector is reaching unprecedented heights, with new data from the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) highlighting remarkable growth in student enrolments. The latest figures reveal that 34,893 students are currently enrolled in private institutions, marking an impressive 12% increase compared to the previous academic year.
The surge in international student enrolment is even more striking, with a 25% growth compared to last year. International students now constitute one-third of the total enrolment, a testament to Dubai’s growing reputation as a hub for world-class education.
“Education opens doors to endless opportunities, and Dubai is positioning itself as a leader in global higher education,” said Her Excellency Aisha Miran, Director General of KHDA. “This milestone aligns perfectly with the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33, which aims to establish Dubai as a preferred destination for higher education on the global stage. The rise in international students demonstrates our success in attracting talent from across the globe.”
A Growing Network of Institutions
The academic landscape in Dubai continues to expand, with five new international universities opening during the 2023-2024 academic year. This brings the total number of KHDA-regulated higher education providers in the emirate to 38, offering a wide array of programmes tailored to meet the needs of a diverse student body.
With over 650 academic programmes now available, the most sought-after degrees include business, engineering, information technology, and media and design. In addition, fields like natural and physical sciences, humanities, and law have seen the highest growth in enrolments, reflecting the emirate’s commitment to supporting diverse academic pursuits.
The Student Profile: International vs. Emirati
The KHDA data reveals a significant presence of both international and Emirati students, creating a rich cultural tapestry across Dubai’s institutions. International students, who make up one-third of all enrolments, often pursue business, technology, and interdisciplinary degrees. Meanwhile, Emirati students demonstrate strong interest in business, legal studies, and the sciences.
Inclusivity is a cornerstone of Dubai’s education sector, with robust initiatives to support students of determination—those with disabilities or additional learning needs. These initiatives ensure equitable access to high-quality education and an inclusive academic environment for all.
Degree Preferences and Program Trends
The majority of students in Dubai’s private higher education institutions are pursuing bachelor’s degrees, comprising 63% of the total enrolments. Another 28% are enrolled in master’s programmes, and 2% are focused on doctoral studies.
Dubai’s universities are also adapting to global trends by offering innovative, research-driven, and interdisciplinary programmes. Business remains the leading field of study, but there is notable growth in STEM and creative disciplines, ensuring students are prepared for a competitive, rapidly evolving job market.
